Wandering Spud

I got Spud several years ago, a baby red-footed tortoise, not much bigger than a hen’s egg.  Since that time it has gone from hen’s egg to ostrich egg size, from less than three inches to over eight inches.

Last year I decided to let him wander around on the patio.  He was too big to get under the gate and too small to get into the planters.  In case he decided to wander in to leafy or overgrown corners, I painted a florescent pink spot on the back of his shell.  The pink spot has now separated into three pink spots.

The past week or so it’s been warm enough to let Spud out onto the patio to wander.  And wander he does.  Up and down the patio for hours.  Don’t let anyone tell you that tortoises can’t climb.  They may not be monkeys, but Spud climbs into the planters and rustles his way from one end to the other.  When he’s tired he finds a shrub to hide under.  Those pink spots have come in handy on more than one occasion.

  1. I enjoy your stories so much! Please post some pictures of Spud. I can’t imagine how much fun it must be to have a tortoise wandering around the yard.
